Relationship Registration
What is relationship registration?
Relationship registration in Australia involves civil registration of a de facto relationship with a couple’s local state government body. It is a civil registration. Not all states/territories offer this.
It allows unmarried couples, including same-sex couples, to officially register their relationship with the government. It provides legal recognition and certain rights and responsibilities, similar to marriage, such as inheritance and property rights, superannuation, and eligibility for certain government benefits and entitlements. Registration requirements and benefits may vary between states and territories in Australia, so it's essential to check specific regulations in your area.
How is relationship registration relevant to a partner visa application?
Relationship registration can be relevant to a partner visa application as it serves as formal proof of a genuine and committed relationship.
It also allows some de facto couples to meet the criteria of a partner visa application sooner than they might otherwise. The relationship criteria for an Australia partner visa requires one of the following:
The couple are married; or
The couple are in a de facto relationship and this relationship has existed for 12 months or more; or
The couple are in a de facto relationship and they have their relationship registered with a relevant state government
