English Language Criteria

  • The following tests are accepted by the DHA:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic or General Training)

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)

Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT)

    Occupational English Test (OET)

    Cambridge C1 Advanced test

Note: Some testing centres are providing versions of their tests that you can take at home. The DHA do not currently accept these tests.

  • The scores required for your application will be different depending on a number of factors such as visa type or whether you are the primary or secondary applicant.

You may also be aiming for a higher English test score in order to claim additional points in the points test for the Skill Select visa types.

The scoring differs between each testing provider, so be sure you understand what the scores of your test means for you.

See below for a break down of the English levels and the relevant test scores for each.

  • There are 5 levels of English relevant to Australian immigration. These are listed below in order from lowest to highest level:

    Functional English

    Vocational English

    Competent English

    Proficient English

    Superior English

  • English tests can be taken to be valid for up to 3 years. The validity for your visa application, depends on the visa subclass and whether you are a primary or secondary applicant.

It is important to consider whether the English requirement is required at time of application or the time of decision, as your English score will need to be valid at that time.

  • This will depend on the criteria of the visa you are applying for and the level of English you need to show.

If you hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom (not inc British National (Overseas)), the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, your passport will be sufficient to show you have Competent English.

You may also be able to show evidence of education undertaken in English to meet any Functional English criteria.
